The Cure (1995)

The first movie I’m going to review is from 1995. It’s called The Cure. There are some spoilers in this review so stop now if you want. One thing you have to keep in mind is that this movie is from 1995, what little medical information in this movie is now very outdated. That being said the movie is about a friendship between two boys, one a loner (Erik) who has very little parental supervision and a boy (Dexter) with AIDS who has what one would probably describe as a helicopter mom. Erik and Dexter become friends and soon go on a mission to find a cure. Obviously their plan hits several bumps in the road and they end up going back home where Dexter ends up in the hospital. This movie didn’t make me cry because Dexter died. It made me cry because you see Erik mature in ways no 10 year old should have to. He lost his best friend, and blamed himself for not being able to cure him. Honestly, most of the movie I spend wanting to smack Erik upside the head, but really the villain of the story is Erik’s mother.

On the other hand Dexter’s mother is probably the strongest human alive. How she could stand up for Erik in unimaginable ways after her own child died, and not blame him for his death is beyond me, but it was truly a heartwarming story that ripped my heart out and stomped on it before gluing it back together.
