John Wick 2
Two immediate thoughts jumping into the second installment: THAT POOR CAR, and oh hey, we’re picking up right where we left off.
Watching the Mustang get completely pulverized gave me immediate flashbacks to Nicolas Cage destroying Eleanor in Gone in 60 Seconds (if you know, you know). John Leguizamo is back with a little more sass this time around—understandably so after seeing that car.
As soon as John buries his past in concrete, an unexpected visitor shows up to drag him right back in.
The Good News: THEY DIDN’T KILL THE DOG THIS TIME.
“Rules. Without them, we live with the animals.”
Chapter 2 really opens up the lore of the Continental and its strict underworld code. Claudia Gerini (as Gianna) gives off serious younger-Stockard-Channing vibes—remaining elegant even in death in the most unelegant ways. Though the mercy headshot felt a bit extreme, it sets off an obligatory, massive gunfight right when you think John might actually pull off an easy in-and-out job.
By the halfway point, the movie feels like watching someone play a stealth video game. You're trying to stay quiet for the mission, make one wrong move, ruin the stealth, and just say "fuck it"—going balls-to-the-wall and wasting every round of ammo just to stay alive.
A Few Favorite Moments:
Professional Courtesy: How sweet that John and Cassian remember each other’s drinks, even while trying to kill each other.
Hollywood Silencer Logic: Watching them casually walk through a crowded subway terminal firing silenced pistols across the corridor like no one can hear them. Look, I get they had suppressors, but... silencers aren’t that silent!
The Matrix Reunion: Morpheus himself (Laurence Fishburne) casually showing up and immediately calling John out on his bullshit.
The Verdict: Overall, a solid continuation of the franchise. While it has a few stretches of unnecessary or repetitive action, it expands the backstory and world-building in a way that makes the universe feel so much bigger.
